Hyundai and Kia are recalling more than 200,000 electric vehicles (EVs) in North America due to a major issue that can cause the cars to lose drive power. This recall affects several models, including the 2022-2024 Kia EV6, 2022-2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5, 2023-2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6, and certain Genesis models (GV60, GV70, and G80 Electrified).
The core problem lies in the vehicles’ integrated charging control units, which may become damaged over time due to high voltage and thermal cycling. This can lead to the failure of the 12-volt battery, resulting in a gradual loss of drive power. In some cases, the issue could lead to a complete loss of power, posing safety risks for drivers. Fortunately, no accidents, injuries, or fatalities have been reported so far.
The recall follows a similar incident earlier this year involving around 147,000 vehicles. Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Hyundai and Kia to bring their cars in for repairs. These repairs include replacing the damaged charging units, checking and potentially replacing fuses, and updating the vehicle software to optimize thermal management.
The recall affects over 145,000 vehicles in the U.S., with additional units recalled in Canada
