GRIDSERVE, an electric vehicle leasing company, conducted a study that showed the Tesla Model 3 was the most searched electric vehicle (EV) globally, according to Google search data from 2022 for over 300 EV models in the US, UK, and globally. Even though the Tesla Model Y has replaced the Model 3 as the best-selling EV in the US, the Model 3 continues to be the most well-known and “sought-after” EV. The study found that the Model 3 was the most searched EV in 41 US states and in the UK, with almost 20 million searches worldwide. While the Model Y is selling well, it is not as well-known or searched as the Model 3.
While the Model 3 was the most searched EV in most US states, there were a few exceptions. The Cadillac Lyriq, Rivian R1T, Hyundai Ioniq 5, and Kia EV6 were each the most searched EV in at least one state. The study also speculated on which EVs might be popular in 2023 based on search data. The Volvo EX90, Tesla Semi, and BMW i7 were among the top choices, but the Tesla Cybertruck was not on the list.
While some may question the value of analyzing Google search data in this way, the study highlights the Model 3’s ongoing popularity and recognition among consumers globally. Despite being on the market for a while, the Model 3 remains the most searched EV and continues to be a top choice for those interested in purchasing an EV.
