Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Minister, Sharjeel Inam Memon, presided over a transport department meeting on Tuesday, where he announced that the highly anticipated Peoples Bus Service (PBS) smartphone app is set to be launched on June 22. The minister was provided with a comprehensive briefing on various aspects of the bus service, including new routes, the intelligent transport system (ITS), and the command & control room.
During the briefing, it was highlighted that the buses in the PBS fleet will be equipped with state-of-the-art features to enhance passenger comfort and safety. These features include CCTV cameras, audio systems, USB connections, Wi-Fi, and driver alarms, all of which will be integrated into the intelligent transport system. The ITS in the buses will be responsible for activating the CCTV cameras, displaying real-time information on screens, enabling live tracking and monitoring, ensuring efficient operations, and enhancing the overall commuting experience.
One of the key highlights of the upcoming PBS smartphone app is its real-time bus tracking functionality. Commuters will be able to track the buses in real-time through the app, allowing them to plan their journeys more effectively and make informed decisions about their travel routes. Additionally, the app will facilitate online payments, eliminating the need for physical cash transactions and providing a convenient and contactless payment solution for passengers.
Addressing the importance of sustainable transportation, the minister emphasized the need for electric bus charging infrastructure. It was revealed that the PBS fleet in Karachi will be expanded with the addition of 20 green buses by August 20, contributing to the government’s efforts to promote eco-friendly public transportation options.
In a bid to enhance connectivity and improve transportation services in the region, the Sindh government has directed Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon to focus on utilizing the PBS to connect rural areas, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, Sukkur, and Mirpurkhas, with the metropolitan regions. This initiative aims to facilitate travel for residents in remote areas and ensure seamless connectivity between different parts of the province.
The PBS mobile app will offer a range of features to assist users in planning their journeys effectively. Firstly, it will provide general information about routes, schedules, and fares, enabling passengers to plan their trips in advance. Secondly, the app will include a bus tracking feature that informs commuters about the estimated arrival time of the next bus, helping them manage their time more efficiently. Lastly, the app will enable users to purchase and activate a travel card or make payments for the PBS service using a QR code, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly payment experience.
The official launch of the PBS mobile app is scheduled for June 22, marking a significant milestone in the efforts to modernize and improve the public transportation system in Sindh province. The app is poised to enhance the convenience, accessibility, and overall experience for commuters, making the PBS a preferred mode of transportation for the residents of Karachi and other cities in Sindh.
