The Toyota Corolla Cross is generating significant excitement in Pakistan as it is one of the most eagerly awaited locally assembled hybrid SUVs. The project has been made possible through Indus Motor Company’s (IMC) substantial investment of $100 million in developing hybrid vehicles within the country. As anticipation grew, rumors surrounding the launch intensified following IMC’s presentation of the first locally assembled Corolla Cross to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in June 2023.
During the meeting with the Prime Minister, IMC’s delegation, led by Vice Chairman Shinji Yanagi and Chief Executive Ali Asghar Jamali, showcased the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and received high praise for their initiative in manufacturing Pakistan’s first locally-made hybrid SUV. The significance of further localization and exporting of hybrid vehicles was emphasized during the meeting, and the Prime Minister assured his support for HEV incentives outlined in the Auto Policy 2021-2026. Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar also expressed appreciation for the new product, recognizing its potential economic and environmental benefits.
Initially slated for a launch in June-July 2023, the economic situation in Pakistan caused delays. However, reliable sources now suggest that the launch might take place in December 2023 or January 2024, depending on the country’s economic stability. The current volatile situation in the country has not only impacted potential launches but also affected the production plans of various car companies over the past year or so.
Despite the setbacks, the automotive industry is optimistic that the situation will improve, allowing them to resume normal activities. The success of the Toyota Corolla Cross launch is seen as a crucial milestone for Pakistan’s automobile sector, especially given its significance as the first locally manufactured hybrid HEV SUV. The stakeholders are keenly observing the economic developments to gauge the right timing for the launch, aiming for a favorable market environment and sustained interest from potential buyers.
