There are two kinds of cars: some run on gas, and some run on electricity. Gas cars fill up with gas at any gas station, but electric cars need special chargers. One important charger is called the NACS, made by Tesla. Many car companies now want to use this NACS for their electric cars, so more electric cars can use Tesla’s chargers.
Before, electric cars had different chargers like CHAdeMO, CCS, and Tesla’s NACS. People really like Tesla’s chargers, so other car companies want to use the NACS.
In May 2023, Ford was the first to say, “We want to use Tesla’s NACS.” After that, many other car companies agreed one after the other, like falling dominoes. The engineering group SAE International will also make a standard for the NACS.
Let’s talk about the car companies that will use Tesla’s NACS:
- BMW: BMW and its brands Mini and Rolls-Royce will start using Tesla’s NACS in early 2025. Older electric cars with a different charger can still use Tesla’s chargers with an adapter. BMW is also making it easy to pay for charging using a car app.
- Fisker: Fisker is a new electric car company, and they will use Tesla’s NACS in 2025.
- Ford: In spring 2024, Ford’s electric cars can use Tesla’s Superchargers. Even though Ford’s electric cars have a different charger, there will be an adapter for Tesla’s fast chargers in 2025.
- Genesis: Genesis will use the NACS in the US in late 2024 and in Canada in 2025. They will have adapters for cars with a different charger.
- General Motors (GM): GM will start using Tesla’s NACS in 2024 and make it the standard for all their electric cars in 2025. They will have adapters too.
- Honda: Honda’s new electric cars will have the NACS starting in 2025. They will also provide adapters for their older electric cars.
- Hyundai: Hyundai will use Tesla’s NACS starting in late 2024. They will also provide adapters.
- Jaguar: Jaguar’s new electric cars will use the NACS in 2025. They will give adapters to their existing electric car owners.
- Kia: Kia will start using the NACS in new electric cars in late 2024 in North America. They will also provide adapters. But the 2015–2019 Kia Soul EV uses a different charger.
- Lexus: Electric Lexus cars will have the NACS as standard in 2025. They will have adapters for cars with a different charger.
- Mercedes-Benz: Mercedes-Benz will use the NACS in electric cars starting in 2025. They will make adapters for cars with a different charger. Mercedes also plans to build its own charging network with over 2500 fast chargers.
- Mini: Mini, a brand under BMW, will start using the NACS in new electric cars in early 2025. Older Mini electric cars can also use Tesla’s chargers with an adapter.
- Nissan: Nissan will use the NACS for the Canadian and US markets in 2025. They will provide an adapter for electric cars with a different charger.
- Polestar/Volvo: Polestar and Volvo, owned by a Chinese company, will make the NACS standard for all their electric cars in 2025. They will offer adapters for different chargers.
- Rivian: Rivian’s R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV will use the NACS in 2025. They will provide adapters.
- Rolls-Royce: Rolls-Royce, another brand under BMW, will use the NACS in new electric cars in early 2025. Older Rolls-Royce electric cars can use Tesla’s chargers with an adapter.
- Toyota: Toyota’s new electric cars will have the NACS as standard in 2025. They will provide adapters for cars with a different charger.
This means more electric cars can use Tesla’s chargers, making it easier for electric car owners to charge their cars.
