Haval, a prominent Chinese SUV manufacturer under Great Wall Motors, has launched the much-anticipated second-generation H9 Diesel SUV, a rugged off-road vehicle designed to compete with industry stalwarts like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Everest. This new iteration introduces significant upgrades in design, performance, and technology, catering to adventurers and off-road enthusiasts.
Updated Design and Dimensions
The new Haval H9 features a bold, square design reminiscent of classic off-road vehicles. Its exterior boasts a side-opening tailgate, roof rails, and a panoramic sunroof. The SUV is available in two versions: one with an external spare tire and another with an external storage box. Dimensions vary slightly, with the spare tire version measuring 5,070 mm in length and the storage box version slightly shorter at 5,000 mm. The vehicle’s height of 1,930 mm and a wheelbase of 2,850 mm provide ample interior space.
Engine Options and Off-Road Features
The Haval H9 offers two engine options: a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine producing 221 hp and a 2.4-liter turbocharged diesel engine delivering 184 hp and 480 Nm of torque. The diesel engine is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, while the gasoline variant features an 8-speed automatic. Both models come with an intelligent Torque-On-Demand four-wheel-drive system, ensuring optimal traction in challenging terrains. The SUV supports seven driving modes, including standard, mud, snow, and sand, enhancing its versatility for off-road adventures.
Interior and Technology
Inside, the H9 is equipped with a modern and spacious cabin featuring a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip. The SUV includes advanced features such as smartphone remote monitoring, over-the-air (FOTA) updates, and a robust noise-cancellation system with laminated glass and 34 soundproof panels for a quieter ride. Configurations include five- and seven-seater options, with up to 1,814 liters of cargo space available when the rear seats are folded down.
Advanced Safety and Assistance Systems
Safety remains a priority, with the Haval H9 incorporating 13 Level 2 advanced driver assistance features. These include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking. The SUV also boasts an impressive towing capacity of 2.5 tons, making it suitable for towing trailers or boats.
Pricing and Availability
Pre-sales for the second-generation H9 have begun in China, with prices ranging from approximately $28,900 to $33,100, depending on the trim level. Early buyers can benefit from discounts and trade-in incentives. Although it has launched in China, there is speculation about its availability in international markets such as South Africa and Australia, where Haval’s previous models have gained traction.
