Punjab University has once again postponed its scheduled examinations due to worsening smog conditions in Lahore and surrounding regions. This decision aligns with the Punjab government’s directives, which include a three-day lockdown in highly affected areas like Lahore and Multan. Educational institutions, including schools and universities, have been instructed to shift to online classes temporarily to ensure academic continuity and prioritize public health.
Health and Environmental Concerns
The extreme smog in Lahore has led to the city being ranked among the worst globally for air quality. This environmental crisis is attributed to vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, and crop burning. In response, the government has intensified efforts to curb pollution, including sealing non-compliant industrial and commercial facilities and imposing restrictions on high-emission vehicles.
Examination Rescheduling and Notifications
Punjab University has assured students that new exam dates will be announced after assessing improvements in air quality. Meanwhile, students are encouraged to use online learning platforms provided by the university to prepare for their postponed exams.
Broader Impact Across Punjab
The smog crisis has prompted the closure of educational institutions across the province, excluding hill stations like Murree, until November 24. The government, alongside the Higher Education Commission (HEC), has mandated online learning in affected areas, aiming to mitigate disruptions to students’ education.
The Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and other authorities continue to address the smog issue through enforcement actions, including the sealing of properties violating environmental regulations.
