Seamless Integration of Technology and Safety

On July 7, 2023, BMW Motorrad unveiled an exciting innovation for motorcyclists, the ConnectedRide Smartglasses. These smart glasses are equipped with advanced head-up display (HUD) technology, specifically designed to enhance safety and awareness on the road. By projecting real-time data, such as navigation directions and speed, directly onto the rider’s field of vision, the ConnectedRide Smartglasses provide valuable information without requiring the rider to divert their attention from the road.

BMW Motorrad’s press release highlights the remarkable progression from science fiction to reality with the introduction of the ConnectedRide Smartglasses. Building upon the HUD technology already familiar in the automotive sector, these motorcycle goggles enable riders to access crucial information in a more anticipatory manner, contributing to a safer riding experience.

Unlike augmented reality helmets, BMW Motorrad opted for smart glasses to provide a more universal choice for riders. The smart glasses are seamlessly connected to smartphones via Bluetooth and an accompanying app. This connectivity allows riders to customize settings conveniently using the handlebar-mounted multi-controller, enhancing user control and adaptability. The design of the glasses ensures a comfortable fit for various helmet types and face shapes, enabling riders to enjoy their benefits for extended periods. Additionally, the ConnectedRide Smartglasses offer an impressive battery life of up to ten hours, providing ample usage time.

The package includes two sets of UVA/UVB lenses, catering to different lighting conditions. Riders can choose between a tinted lens for brighter environments and an 85% transparent lens for regular use. Furthermore, BMW Motorrad offers an RX adapter for riders who require prescription glasses, ensuring that everyone can take advantage of this innovative technology.

The ConnectedRide Smartglasses are available in two sizes, medium and large, and feature swappable nose pads to achieve an optimal fit for each individual rider. One of the standout features is the real-time GPS data projection, allowing riders to view navigation information directly on the road ahead. This feature offers enhanced convenience and improves situational awareness. Moreover, the glasses can display critical bike information, such as vehicle speed and current gear, further augmenting the riding experience.

With a retail price of 690 EUR (approximately $750 USD), the ConnectedRide Smartglasses may be seen as a premium investment. However, their ability to seamlessly transition between helmets makes them an attractive choice for those who seek the advantages of augmented reality technology in motorcycle riding. While the adoption and widespread use of these smart glasses among riders remains to be seen, their potential to enhance safety and convenience is undeniably promising. BMW Motorrad’s foray into the world of smart glasses opens up exciting possibilities for a more connected and immersive riding experience.
