Hyundai, the sister company of KIA, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years, transitioning from producing affordable vehicles to crafting high-quality, stylish models, spanning across SUVs, Sedans, and Hatchbacks. One of their notable offerings, the Hyundai Tucson, has been in production since 2004 and is currently in its third generation, captivating markets worldwide since its introduction in 2015. In 2019, the Tucson received a significant facelift, incorporating numerous prominent changes to its exterior and interior design, as well as introducing new features. While Hyundai is not a newcomer to the Pakistani market, it stands among the long-standing automotive giants in the country, alongside Toyota, Suzuki, and Honda. Initially, Hyundai used to assemble cars in Pakistan until 2004. However, due to the bankruptcy of its partner, Dewan Farroque Motors, Hyundai was forced to withdraw. After a thirteen-year hiatus, Hyundai has made a strong comeback, forging a partnership with Nishat Mills, a subsidiary of the esteemed Nishat Group.

In Pakistan, Hyundai currently offers five different vehicle models, catering to various preferences and budgets. These models range in price from 4.5 million PKR to 19 million PKR. The available options include the Hyundai Santa Fe GLS, Grand Starex, Hyundai H-100 porter, Hyundai Ioniq, and, lastly, the Tucson. Each of these vehicles brings its own unique blend of style, performance, and features to the Pakistani market, offering customers a diverse selection to choose from.

Trims & Variants:

Nishat first showcased the Hyundai Tucson in 2017 during a groundbreaking ceremony, hinting at its imminent official launch. However, the company officially unveiled and introduced the Hyundai Tucson to the public on August 10, 2020, through a digital online event. Due to the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic, the event was streamed exclusively to a select audience. While the international market offers around five different variants of the Hyundai Tucson, Nishat launched two variants in Pakistan. These include the front-wheel-drive GLS Sport and the all-wheel-drive Ultimate. Initially, the GLS Sport was priced at 49 million PKR, while the Ultimate had a price tag of 54 million PKR. However, shortly after the launch, Hyundai increased the prices of the Tucson. Presently, the GLS Sport is available for 51 million PKR, while the Ultimate is priced at 56 million PKR.

Both variants of the Tucson are powered by a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine. They boast an impressive array of features, such as a tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, adjustable front seats, ABS brakes, and stability control, among others. The AWD Ultimate variant stands out with additional features, including a hands-free tailgate system, leather seats, and 8-way adjustable seats with 2-way lumbar support for both the driver and front passenger. On the other hand, the FWD GLS Sport variant comes with fabric seats and 8-way adjustable seats with lumbar support exclusively for the driver. These distinctions contribute to the overall appeal and customization options available for customers considering the Hyundai Tucson in Pakistan.

Base Variant GLS:

The base variant of the new Hyundai Tucson lacks several key features and options. In terms of the interior, it does not include push start, auto defogger, power seats, lumbar support, wireless charger, panoramic sunroof, or a smart key. When it comes to safety, features such as Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control, Hill Start Assist, Down Hill Assist, and a cooled glove box are absent.

On the exterior, the base variant of the Tucson differs from higher trims. The front headlights are halogen instead of LED, the door handles are body-colored rather than chrome, and the Front Radiator Grille is black with silver paint instead of chrome lining seen in the top two variants of the car. Considering its specifications and features, the base variant of the Hyundai Tucson is comparable to the Sportage Alpha. However, it may be a challenge for the Tucson base variant to capture the attention of car enthusiasts, as the Kia Sportage, despite being Kia Pakistan’s most successful car, has not gained significant traction among consumers.

Engine & Power

Both variants of the Hyundai Tucson come equipped with a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, delivering a power output of 155 horsepower at 6200 rpm. The engine generates a maximum torque of 196 Nm at 4000 rpm. This powertrain is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, ensuring smooth and efficient gear shifts. It is worth noting that the international version of the Tucson originally featured a 2.0-liter engine producing 164 horsepower. However, Hyundai has since upgraded the engine to a 2.4-liter variant, increasing the power output to 181 horsepower. Nevertheless, reviews and tests conducted by car and driver indicate that the 2.0-liter engine did not offer the best performance, particularly in terms of acceleration.

In terms of fuel economy, the Tucson’s average mileage falls within the segment’s range, providing approximately 11-12 kilometers per liter of fuel. This figure aligns with the estimates provided by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as mentioned by the company. While the Tucson’s performance may not be class-leading in terms of acceleration, it still offers a respectable power output and fuel efficiency, making it a practical choice for everyday driving needs.

Ride Quality & Comfort:

The level of comfort and security provided inside a car directly impacts the happiness of passengers, drivers, and customers. Hyundai recognizes this and has implemented various features and improvements in the Hyundai Tucson to ensure top-level comfort. Basic amenities such as the heater, air conditioner, cup holders, coat hangers, front and rear armrests, reclining and sliding front seats have been carefully designed to fulfill these essential needs, prioritizing passenger comfort.

When it comes to ride quality, the Hyundai Tucson surpasses its predecessors without a doubt. The suspensions have been finely tuned, resulting in a smoother and more comfortable ride, even when encountering larger bumps. While the handling of the vehicle may not be exceptionally sporty, it remains competitive within its segment. The weighted steering wheel and reduced body roll instill confidence when maneuvering and changing directions. Despite its high center of gravity, the Tucson delivers a smooth, comfortable, and composed ride. It’s worth noting that the Sport variant offers slight improvements in terms of sporty behavior. However, it falls short of surpassing or challenging the major rivals in its class. Nonetheless, the overall experience provided by the Hyundai Tucson is characterized by a balance of comfort and performance, making it an appealing choice for those seeking a smooth and enjoyable ride.

Exterior Design & Features:

The Hyundai Tucson is an SUV that boasts a visually stunning exterior design, offering customers a captivating look. It is available in a selection of eight eye-catching colors, allowing buyers to choose the one that best suits their style and preferences. The car’s dimensions contribute to its commanding presence on the road, with an overall length of 4480 mm and a width of 1850 mm. These proportions, combined with its remarkable body shape, make the Tucson an impressive sight on the streets.

The current model of the Tucson underwent a facelift in 2019, resulting in a newly redesigned front grille featuring four horizontal chrome bars, adding to its refined appearance. While the rear of the vehicle has seen minimal changes from previous models, it still maintains a cohesive and stylish design. Notably, Hyundai has incorporated LED technology into the Tucson’s headlamps, tail lamps, and daytime running lights, enhancing visibility and adding a touch of modernity. The rear of the car features a high-mount stop lamp and a single stainless steel exhaust, contributing to its overall aesthetic. The body of the Tucson is crafted using clear coat paint, which is consistently applied to the door handles, mirrors, and bumpers. This attention to detail ensures a cohesive and harmonious look throughout the entire vehicle, resembling a true masterpiece.

Interior Design & Features:

In terms of interior space, the Hyundai AWD Tucson offers a generous 31 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in their upright position. Rear passengers can enjoy a comfortable legroom of 38.2 inches, while the front seats provide a spacious 41 inches of legroom. The design of the Hyundai Tucson prioritizes passenger space over cargo capacity, which proves practical for everyday use. The comfort level inside the Tucson lives up to expectations, with well-padded seating areas throughout the SUV, ensuring a pleasant experience for all occupants. Hyundai has taken care to create a passenger-friendly environment within the vehicle. The Hyundai Tucson comes with a four-year warranty, covering up to 100,000 kilometers, providing peace of mind to the owners.

Similar to the exterior, the interior of the Tucson has undergone significant changes. The new interior layout showcases a combination of fabric and leather seats, varying based on the specific variant. The dual-tone color scheme enhances the visual appeal of the interior. The Tucson’s interior is equipped with noteworthy features, including a 10.1-inch touchscreen multimedia system with auto-link capabilities, enabling seamless connectivity. Additionally, the SUV offers convenient amenities such as wireless phone charging, a premium audio system with six speakers, climate control for personalized comfort, a panoramic moonroof for an airy ambiance, and adjustable front seats to cater to individual preferences.

These interior features elevate the driving experience and ensure a pleasant journey for both the driver and passengers of the Hyundai Tucson model.

Safety & Features:

The Hyundai brand places a strong emphasis on security and safety, and the Hyundai Tucson is no exception. While it is important to note that the specific safety features may vary between international trims, Hyundai has implemented several key measures to ensure the well-being of its customers. To begin with, the Tucson is equipped with two airbags, which provide vital protection in the event of a collision. While this may differ from the number of airbags available in international trims, Hyundai has taken measures to prioritize the safety of occupants.

In terms of braking performance, the Tucson features an Antilock Braking System (ABS) that prevents the wheels from locking up during sudden braking, enhancing control and stability. The vehicle also incorporates technologies such as Vehicle Stability Management, Brake Assist, and Electronic Stability Control to optimize stability and responsiveness in various driving conditions. Additional safety features of the Hyundai Tucson include Downhill Brake Control, Hill-Start Assist Control, Electronic Parking Brake, Immobilizer, a parking camera for improved visibility, and Auto Cruise Control for enhanced convenience during long journeys.

While the exact safety specifications may differ across regions and trims, Hyundai remains committed to prioritizing the security and safety of its customers. By incorporating a range of advanced safety technologies and features, Hyundai aims to provide peace of mind and reassurance to Tucson drivers and passengers alike.

Verdict:

While the Hyundai Tucson may not be the absolute leader in its class, it still offers a pleasant driving experience and comfortable ride, especially for urban driving. It strikes a balance between performance and comfort, making it a suitable choice for those seeking a reliable and enjoyable vehicle for everyday use.

When considering which trim to purchase, the Value trim stands out as a compelling option. It offers a good combination of price and performance, providing a larger and more powerful engine compared to other trims. Additionally, the Value trim includes a range of desirable options, enhancing the overall driving experience. Taking these factors into account, the Value trim of the Hyundai Tucson is recommended for those looking to purchase this model. It offers a balance of performance, features, and value for the price, making it a practical and appealing choice within the Tucson lineup.
